USACC Taghiyev Award was presented to Ambassador Richard Lee Armitage.

Zeynalabdin Taghiyev was one of the first Azerbaijani oil barons in the late 19th century. Born to a poor family, Taghiyev earned his fortune after he discovered oil on a small piece of property, which he had purchased outside of Baku. Taghiyev is known throughout the country for his devotion and philanthropy to the Azerbaijani people.

Taghiyev shared his fortune with his countrymen by building homes, schools, and theaters in Baku, and he sponsored bright young Azerbaijani students, often funding their education at prestigious schools and universities abroad. His countless contributions to Azerbaijani society during his lifetime have made an indelible impression on all Azerbaijanis.

Taghiyev has become a symbol of perseverance, hard work, dedication, and success, while his undying commitment to improving the standard of living in Azerbaijan continues to serve as a source of inspiration to Azerbaijanis of all generations.

The USACC Taghiyev Award of 1999 was presented to: Ambassador Richard Lee Armitage, President, Armitage Associates. The award was presented in appreciation of Ambassador Armitage’s longstanding commitment to Azerbaijan and its people.
